IPDS Germany: Interview with Dan Klein

(music) Before I went to the IPDS programs I didn’t really think of myself as a global educator. So once I went through the programs that I did -IPDS Germany, it really gave me an insight into, Wow! Not only am I helping students to become future citizens
but I’m helping them to become future global citizens, Yes, I would say that my understanding did change. It changed in the way that I was thinking how students used things in the classroom, and when I say things I’m talking about how did they use items such as pencil how did they use something as scissors. Basic stuff like that. I was very fascinated by the way that they used the pencil cases in Germany. So for instance they have cases such as these, ah, you just open it up with a little zipper and right there they’ve got a planner, and as you open it up even further it’s really really super nice because everything is in order. A time where they
did use these is we went on a trip to the local zoo and they had to do an assignment when they they went to each and every single exhibit, so instead of bringing
along there whole backpack all they would have to take along is a sheet of paper, the pencil case, they would stop for a moment, they would do the work and then would move on to the next exhibit. It was awesome. I would most definitely like to use these in my future teaching. I’m currently accumulating a collection of these where I’ve got them from a couple other
countries thanks to a couple friends and I’m hoping to accumulate more in the future. I would highly recommend that they check out IPDS. For me I
learned about pencil cases, for them it might be something else that sticks out to them. Something that they see in the teaching that they would like to bring home to when they are teaching in classroom themselves. (music)
