IRS Resources for Small Business Owners

JEAN:
This is Jean Wetzler. I’m talking with Mike Hull about help and
information the IRS has available for small businesses. Mike, what resources are available for small
businesses and self-employed taxpayers? MIKE:
We have a number of resources on our Web site, at IRS.gov, slash smallbiz – that’s smallbiz
with a “b-i-z”. This section for small businesses is filled
with information that can help you year-round. And during tax filing season, there’s a link
at the top of the page called Filing Season Central – a one-stop assistance center to
help small businesses and self-employed taxpayers file their tax returns. Filing Season Central has links to valuable
information including highlights of tax law changes, “where to file” addresses, tax
tips, and more. It even has a section on tax fraud scams,
so you can recognize and avoid them. JEAN:
What if someone has a question and wants to talk with the IRS? MIKE:
IRS has several toll-free phone numbers, depending on the issue. For instance, if you received a notice from
the IRS, you should call the number on the notice. If you have a question about a small business
tax issue, we have a hotline for that: 1-800-829-4933. Taxpayers with questions about their individual
taxes can call 1-800-TAX-1040. And if your issue can’t be handled online
or by phone, we also have Taxpayer Assistance Centers in many communities. You can find the locations on IRS.gov, slash,
localcontacts –that’s one word: localcontacts – or check your local telephone directory. JEAN:
Thank you for that great information. Anything else you’d like to add? MIKE:
Yes. In addition to the English-language resources on IRS.gov, we also have many resources in
Spanish. Look for the “espanol” link at the top
of our Web site, or go directly to IRS.gov, slash, espanol. And there’s no charge. Our online resources are free and available
24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and many of our toll-free numbers have extended hours
during tax filing season. We encourage small businesses to take advantage
of them. JEAN:
Thank you, Mike. I’ve been talking with Mike Hull of the
IRS. This is Jean Wetzler.
