STEP-UP Youth Employment Program: Become an Intern

(iPhone ringing) (electronic music) – When I get to work, I usually head right upstairs and on the second floor, check my emails when I come in, and sign in and see if I have any emails, any meetings for the day It’s really great having a checklist and a to-do list too to just keep me on task and know after
this, what do I have next. – I get to work, and I do a
little bit of Code Academy. Teaching myself how to code. And then when Johnathon’s all ready we would go through a meeting. – I get here around 8:20, and then I start work at 9, so I get here a little bit early, and I usually just read a book, or else I talk with my supervisor. My first two years of Step-up, I did landscaping, which
I didn’t really like, but someone from Step-Up
told me that eventually I’ll get better jobs once I get older. So I stuck with it and I
was a teacher assistant which I really liked, and later became an activity therapist at Augustana. And now I work at Gillette, where you’re more independent and you gain a lot of maturity here. Step-Up offers you jobs that you wouldn’t be able to get on your own. No one my age will be able
to say, “Yeah, I worked at a hospital doing x-rays.” Step-Up helps you get jobs like this. – [Voiceover] My favorite
thing about my job this summer is probably the experience
that I’m getting, and definitely meeting all these new and different people, and my supervisor. – I feel like Step-Up has enriched my life so much. A lot of times when I think
about what would I be doing this summer, I feel like
I would probably just be at home, watching Netflix
or finding different books to read from the library. So I think Step-Up really gives you this great experience that you can use during the summer to develop yourself and say that this is what I learned from all these experiences. (upbeat music)
